Brenda Montgomery, RN, MS, CDE, has been honored by the American Diabetes Association with a 2013 National Service Achievement Award, the Health Professional Award for Volunteer Service. This award honors a volunteer who has made an outstanding contribution to the American Diabetes Association outside of their professional area of practice/interest. Brenda is Director of the Diabetes Research Group at VA Puget Sound Healthcare System and the University of Washington.

Congratulations to Sakeneh Zraika, PhD, who was recently awarded a National Institutes of Health Research Project Grant (R01) entitled “Impact of Neprilysin on Islet Function.” A major focus of her current and future research is elucidating how neprilysin may regulate whole body glucose homeostasis. SIBCR member Charles Wilkinson, PhD, presented study findings "Nearly Half of Veterans Found with Blast Concussions Might Have Hormone Deficiencies" at the American Physiological Society meeting in Boston in April 2013 and it has been making waves since. The APS press release was picked up by a number of blogs, UW press release and, a lead article in the VA Research Currents, and a related article in the Los Angeles Times. This research is supported in part by Dr. Wilkinson's SIBCR-administered Department of Defense grant, as well as by intramural VA funding.
