LABORATORY TECHNICIAN

Research lab technician with assay experience needed to work with a small clinical research group focused on type 2 diabetes research and located at the Seattle VA Medical Center.

The successful applicant will work with a small, successful clinical research team focused on type 2 diabetes research. The applicant must be able to work independently as well as with the team. Desirable traits also include attention to detail and problem solving abilities.

Laboratory procedures/skills needed are:

The applicant will primarily be responsible for running and developing/testing assays for ongoing and future research studies. This may include performance of ELISAs, RIAs, colorimetric and fluorometric assays and rtPCR, including any necessary sample preparation, extraction and processing. The applicant will also be responsible for maintaining organized records of all assays, organize data into spreadsheets, perform statistical analysis and assist in data interpretation. The applicant will be responsible for presenting quality control reviews periodically.

The applicant will be expected to assist with clinical research study procedures including possible sample collection, bedside glucose analysis, sample processing and separation. This aspect will include some limited contact with study subjects.

The applicant will also be responsible for general lab duties such as organization and shipping of samples, maintaining a clean and safe lab environment, maintaining inventories of chemicals, ordering lab supplies, etc.

The necessary regulatory training required for the job will be provided upon hiring.

Requirements: Med tech degree or Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences with at least 2 years lab experience in performance of assays is required.  Experience in development or troubleshooting of new assays highly desirable. An equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute for the stated requirements.

This position is available part-time (20 hours/week) or full-time (40 hours/week)

RESEARCH DIETICIAN

The Seattle Institute for Biochemical and Clinical Research is seeking a part time Research Dietitian.  Typical duties include but are not limited to: design and implementation of dietary protocols for metabolic studies of diabetes and obesity; developing and implementing policies regarding unit operation in areas such as food purchasing and preparation; maintenance of research data; assisting with study design and planning to efficiently coordinate concurrent research projects and assisting with preparation of operating budget for unit.

The incumbent will meet on a scheduled basis with study participants to provide counsel and training in the implementation and maintenance of diets including self-monitoring, strategies for restaurant eating, goal-setting and coping with lapse and relapse.  S/he will provide evidence based information about improving nutrition and weight status and relevance of these behavior changes for treatment of diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular disease.  S/he will plan, organize and conduct group classes on a regular basis per study protocol.

S/he will evaluate ongoing adherence and compliance with dietary protocol and will play an active role in recruitment and retention of study participants.  The Research Dietitian will work as a team member with the Principal Investigator, Co-Investigators, Program Director, Lifestyle Behaviorists and other staff. 

The incumbent will attend national-level planning and training meetings as appropriate.

Will be required to lift weights up to 40 pounds for scale calibrations.

Desired Training and Education Requirements

  • Graduate of accredited school with Bachelors in Food and Nutrition or Dietetics and/or Masters in Nutrition including completion of clinical practicum experience
  • Registered Dietitian with the Commission on Dietetic Registration of the American Dietetic Association

POST-DOC in BLOOD-BRAIN BARRIER/CEREBROVASCULAR BIOLOGY

NIH-funded post-doctoral position at the Seattle Veterans Affairs Puget Sound Health Care System with an academic partnership at the University of Washington, with a main focus on blood-brain barrier.  Work involves neuroinflammation, neurodegeneration, drug delivery, and disease models including diabetes, obesity, and Alzheimer’s. 

Interests in pharmacokinetics, neuroinflammation, cellular biology, in vivo and in vitro models of disease are desirable.  Experience with cell culture or animal models preferred.
